2014: A Cheesecake in Review

Another year nearly done and dusted. Once again 12 months have just flown by in a flurry of semi coherent moments. I am, as ever, thankful for my family and friends.

With the exception of books, which I’ll waffle a bit about soon over on The Eloquent Page, there have been bucket loads of great entertainment this year. Here are just a few of my personal highlights*

Music

I have what can best be described as eclectic tastes when it comes to tunes. I listen to a ton of soundtracks but love bands as well. My top five for 2014?

Royal Blood – What a RAWK-tastically awesome self-titled debut album. 32 minutes and not a duff second among them.

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag by Brian Tyler – There are some fantastic game soundtracks out there. I love that the same level of detail that is spent on things like game play and graphics is being spent on the music that accompanies it.

Gloryhammer – Tales From The Kingdom of Fife – Mad as a bag of hammers and all the better for it. The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee is sublime lunacy. In order to pull off daft you have to do it well and these guys know it. I’m mightily impressed.

The Last of Us by Gustavo Santaolalla – Another game soundtrack. I hold this entirely responsible for me actually buying a PS4 and the game. Hauntingly evocative stuff. Just blissfully good.

TV

The Flash – A perfect companion show to Arrow. I love how Barry revels in his abilities. I was discussing it with MadNad and she prefers Arrow, she likes things a bit darker than me. She did agree however that Flash is entertaining. The Man in the Yellow Suit in particular was a stonking episode. The crossover episodes with Arrow were great fun as well.

The Walking Dead – The end of the world just keeps getting darker and darker. Cannibals, corrupt cops and some nice morally dubious decisions. Great stuff. I’ve noticed every week MadNad taking copious notes. I’m sure she’ll be prepared when the inevitable zom-poc arrives.

Vikings – Oh Ragnar Lodbrok you just want it all don’t you? Lets see if you cant get it. Well played History channel, well played.

The Musketeers – Cheesy I know but I adore a bit of cheese. Second season is imminent. I look forward to it buckling my swash. It is the facial hair, I am ALL of the jealous…and the hats.

I want a hat with a feather in it. Dammit!

I want a hat with a feather in it. Dammit!

Dr Who – I was never in any doubt. Capaldi is a perfect fit. The Tardis is in safe hands.

Film

We’ve managed to devour over 135 films this year. Most have been pretty damn good and there have been a couple of real standouts.

The Imitation Game – This was MadNad’s choice and I’ll admit that I had zero expectations when we went to see this at the cinema. I was more than pleasantly surprised, I loved it.

Guardians of the Galaxy – Marvel know exactly which buttons to press when it comes to summer blockbusters. Damn them and their pelvic sorcery!

GotG

Nightcrawler – Jake Gyllenhaal being all sleazy and shit. Dark as hell and all the better for it.

Interstellar – Christopher Nolan appears to be quite a divisive figure in many circles. Personally I’m a fan. I’ve liked all of his films and this was no exception. I suspect this is the sort of movie that will require multiple viewings. I’ve only seen it once so far but have no doubt I’ll watch it again. Nolan’s like a cinematic onion (honestly, that is a compliment)

Captain America: The Winter Soldier – More Marvel, more explosions. Nuff’ said.

So there you have it some of my entertainment highlights for 2014, the year I turned forty (please note my mental age is still roughly fifteen. I dont expect that will ever change).

I reckon 2015 is already shaping up to be interesting. There are various plans afoot in the Cheesecake household that are bound to create a certain amount of chaos. I’m always game for a bit of mayhem. In other, entirely unrelated, news I think I have made a decision regarding my fitness challenge for 2015. More on that soon.

Hope you’re all having an utterly splendid festive season.

See you next year

* Yes, I’m well aware some of the things mentioned in this post have been around longer than the last 12 months but this is my blog and so I can do whatever I like 🙂

State of the Cheesecake Nation – 2014 Edition

Lets just skip the whole “it’s been months since your last update” thing. It has been months and I’m truly sorry. Onwards!

And the award for musical excellence goes to…

My other half knows that I am a sucker when it comes to the more unusual musical nuggets you can find on the internet. She heard this and immediately thought of me. I’ll be honest I can’t for the life of me think why?

Oh I remember now – an army of evil undead unicorns invading Dundee. Knew I’d remember eventually. The album, Tales from the Kingdom of Fife is gloriously silly but also manages to be proper RAWK at the same time. Gloryhammer are great fun. Highly recommended listening my internet chooms.

The Remake/Reboot Quandary

Lots of buzz floating around at the moment regarding various reboots and remakes. Robocop reappeared recently and immediately polarised opinion. There has also been lots of talk re new Fantastic Four movie on the horizon. When it comes to remake and reboots I tend to take each on a case by case basis. There are certain films for example where I think it would be entirely unnecessary. Your never going to better the likes of Jaws or The Godfather so frankly why bother trying. On the other hand comic book movies can be remade/reimagined and work quite successfully. Spiderman being a perfect example. I enjoyed Tobey Maguire’s take but Andrew Garfield’s version is equally valid.

Random Internet Wish Fulfilment

I read a wild rumor yesterday that Mads Mikkelsen might be being considered to possibly be in with a chance of being involved with being in the running for Dr Strange*. That has the potential to be spectacularly bonkers if by some slim, and I mean proper tiny here people, chance this turned out to be true. Imagine Hannibal Lecter as the Sorcerer Supreme. I reckon he could pull that role off with aplomb.

Mads Mikkelsen yesterday

Mads Mikkelsen yesterday

On a side note – I’ve always been a fan of Dr Strange’s huge oversized collar. I hope that makes it into the movie version when it does finally appear.

You Might Think That, I Couldn’t Possibly Comment

Started watching US version of House of Cards. The Internets were all excited about season 2 so I thought I best give season 1 a try. It’s kinda weird as I still have reasonably vivid memories of the original UK version with Ian Richardson. Don’t get me wrong I was impressed with Kevin Spacey’s performance. Frank Underwood is suitably manipulative and power hungry but I think Francis Urquhart just nudges it for me. Weirdly this article in the Telegraph sort of captures my point. I will continue watch the new version though. I am intrigued to see the differences between the two interpretations.

Urquhart

Francis has his eye on you. Run away!

Anyway, enough of this internet folderol. I’m off to go and contribute to society in some far more meaningful way. Perhaps a new book review?

Ron

Till next time brethren,

Be excellent to one another and stay frosty

Sir Francis Cheesecake

* My that was a long sentence wasn’t it? Got there in the end mind you so I think we’re all good.

Pablo Cheesecake vs 2013

Nearly the end of 2013 so I thought a little review of the last twelve months might be in order. Here is a plethora of random stuff and things that caught my eye.

Vikings, Bloody Thousands of Em’!

For reasons I’m not entirely sure of there have been quite a lot of viking related stuff in 2013. I find myself rather pleased. (I think perhaps in my more whimsical daydreams I like the idea of being a Viking myself.)

  • I read the first Northlanders graphic novel by Brian Wood and Davide Gianfelice. It’s a superb bit of storytelling and visual striking work.
  • Swords of Good Men by Snorri Kristjansson was released and I got to meet him. Splendid chap and excellent book.
  • The Polaris Whisper by Kenneth Gregory also has a distinctly Nordic tone and a plot point that managed to catch me totally unaware, which was nice.
We're going to pick a fight!

We’re going to pick a fight!

  • Everything about the the television show The Vikings is brilliant. The soundtrack by Trevor Morris is particularly evocative. Looking forward to season two already. The History Channel really picked a winner with this one.

It’s All About The Rimming

Pacific Rim was one of my favorite films of 2013. No, I don’t care if the physics was wrong. I don’t give a single whopping fuck if the Jaegers would collapse under their own weight. Give me a break… IT WAS GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT ALIENS FOR FUCKS SAKE. It’s essentially Power Rangers with a humungous budget. Great fun, ace soundtrack and Ron Perlman wearing gold tipped boots. Doesn’t get any better than that. Consider me a certified, dyed in the wool Kaiju groupie.

Pacific RimThe other Rim this year was Skyrim. I finally caved and started playing the game on PC. Her inside the doors has been raving about it for ages now. I have to admit it is quite addictive. The game looks beautiful and stuff like this can happen.

This is going to end badly...

This is going to end badly…

 The Golden Age of Geekdom

I have this theory – If you’re a geek you’ll be pleased to know that we are now living in a golden age. Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Man of Steel, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. There has been a whole shedload of great comic book related movies this year. The best part – there are so many more still to come. Hollywood has finally cottoned on to the fact that geeks love their superhero movies (as long as they are treated with a bit of respect). Which was my favourite? Man of Steel I think. Henry Cavill worked perfectly as a the last son of Krypton. The story was epic in scope and the Hans Zimmer soundtrack is suitably anthemic to boot.

Its like looking in a mirror. Honestly!

Its like looking in a mirror. Honestly!

Kickin It Old School

I rediscovered Nemesis the Warlock this year. Purely by accident it came back into my life and I’m glad to report it is still one of the best comics I’ve ever read.

NemesisIf you’ve never read it before you really should.

Doctor What?

Fifty years and still going strong. All the anniversary shenanigans were fab.  We were lucky enough to see The Day of the Doctor at the local cinema and it was wonderful.  It left me genuinely excited for the arrival of Mr Capaldi.

SandshoesSo there you have it. Some stuff wot I liked this year. I imagine I will probably like stuff next year as well. Time will out.

Stuff and Nonsense

Pablo Cheesecake object of desire?

…Ha, there’s a post title I never thought I’d use

I had the weirdest experience last week. I was standing waiting for the the ever lovely MadNad to meet me after work when a car drove by and I got a wolf whistle. Stunned doesn’t even begin to described my reaction. To give you some perspective, I’m not far off being 39 years old and in all that time this has never happened to me before. My first reaction was to check behind me to make sure that there wasn’t a male model walking by and I was in his way. Just the oddest experience. What’s the standard response to this? Should I be flattered? Based on the fact it has taken nearly 39 years to get my first wolf whistle I estimate I should be due another in approximately 2052. I want to know now how I should deal with it so that I’m prepared.

C’Mon Hollywood, Give Us A Break

I saw a link on a website recently that heralded that 10th movie spot for Man of Steel. 10TH!!! Isn’t that verging on overkill. Don’t get me wrong I am jazzed to see the film but if I watch all of these then I fear that sense of excitement will soon be gone. Listen up Hollywood, here’s the deal. When your gargantuan marketing machines have a new film to promote how about you create just one trailer? All I’m looking for something that will entice me into the theatre. That’s all I need. I dont think this is an impossible task. I don’t want to see the whole fucking thing in three minute chunks spread over a six month build up. I just want one trailer, one poster and possibly a sneak listen to the soundtrack.

Actually while we’re it it. If your trailer is for a comedy probably not a great idea to include one of the funniest moments in the trailer (I’m looking at you Hangover 3). As soon as the scene started in the film I knew exactly where it was going to end. Potentially amusing scenario ruined. Bit of a shame that. Especially when the film in question was so short on laughs.

You’ll Get Square Eyes

I’m in thrall to the gogglebox. Always have been, always will be. Right now there are some absolutely splendid shows airing in the UK. I’ve become somewhat obsessed with my Saturday night fix of Scandinavian crime with Arne Dahl on BBC4. Sky Atlantic has given us and Game of Thrones and Banshee, both which are superb examples of their respective genres. Channel 4 have just started showing The Returned, which based on the first episode, is going to be a keeper. All of these shows are pretty dark but rest assured it’s not all doom and gloom. Parks and Recreation is sublime comedy that started off slow but has become a weekly ritual in our house. I only wish I could live my life like a Scottish Ron Swanson. Truly he is a Renaissance man if ever there was one.

2013 Challenge Update

Its been a while so I thought I’d finish with an update for this years fitness challenge. So far in 2013 I’ve cycled six hundred and sixty five kilometres. Only another three hundred and thirty five to go! I reckon I can probably manage that. If anyone out there is taking on their own challenge. I salute you. Go for it and stay positive. If I can do it anyone can!

I look almost exactly like this at the gym...almost.

I look almost exactly like this at the gym…almost.

Right I’m off, till next time stay frosty amigos

Oh, before I forget my Pablo Does 40 Things website will be launching soon. Be prepared to follow the zany adventures of an idiot who has successfully avoided doing lots of things in the last four decades.

The Name’s Cheesecake, Double O Cheesecake

Saw the latest Bond film yesterday afternoon (The Man With the Golden Thunderballs Never Dies Tomorrow Enough?) . Have to admit I was suitably impressed with it all. Craig’s Bond really wears his flaws on his sleeve. Dame Judy Dench squaring off against the demented and slightly camp Javier Bardem was very well handled. Even hipster Q (Yes, I know he’s called Ben Whishaw but I prefer Hipster Q), Albert Finney and Moneypenny worked.

I’ve read elsewhere that this Bond feels to many like a reboot of the franchise and I have to say that I tend to agree. It was Bond in its rawest form. There was a distinct lack of gadgets and the seemingly obligatory Bond girls were also kept to a minimum. There was also some insight into Bond’s history which has always been sadly lacking in previous films. Felt like we actually got under his skin a bit for once.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Istanbul appeared to be the ‘go to’ location for rooftop chases. The Bond producers appear to agree. That’s nice.

One thing that irked me a little was all the damn product placement. Cars, booze, computers and countless others that I probably didn’t spot but have no doubt already worked their way into my already ravaged psyche. Too much. I can appreciate that Bond is a brand in itself but it all felt a bit in your face.

I also wasn’t so hot on the title song. Don’t get me wrong. Adele has a cracking voice but I’m just not sure the tune was Bond enough? Time will tell I suppose. In fairness I loathed the theme to The Man With The Golden Gun first time a heard it but I rather like that now. I’m nothing if not fickle.

Overall Sam Mendes has brought Bond slap bang up to date and it works bloody well. Like the end credits said BOND WILL RETURN.

I look like this in my pants as well you know #fact

Saw the trailer for Django Unchained and The Hobbit part 1. Both look very interesting. Django has got a kinda 70’s gangster vibe going on (I suppose you wouldn’t necessarily expect that from a western. Tarantino mashing it up as ever). The Hobbit looks lovely on the big screen. I’ve heard people muttering about it but I seem to recall they all did exactly the same prior to LOTR. I, if I’m being brutally honest, can’t fucking wait

Pirates, Books, Running and Rocky IV

TA-DA! Behold my Internet Catharsis*

Ok, so its possible that you are familiar with the book reviews that I post, or you’ve followed me on some sort of social media or another but perhaps you’ve never found yourself here before? This is where I come to shake what is in my head out to see what happens. This is the land of do as you please. I don’t follow any rules here, including the laws of grammar (as I’m sure some of you have already spotted). This is just a big o’ heap of stuff. If you like, well thats just luvverly. If you don’t then please ensure the door don’t hit you on the ass on the way out.

Any-who , on with this evenings show…

The Crimson Cheesecake and other Golden Oldies

Recently, in life, things have taken a distinctly piratical direction (no, I’m not going to tell you why). This culminated at the weekend with a viewing of The Crimson Pirate. I love that film. It harks back to the days when colour was GLORIOUS TECHNICOLOUR. Burt Lancaster wears stripey tights and manages to make them look manly. His acrobatic skills (from his days in the circus?) get to shine. Hell, at one point even a young Christopher Lee pops up being all evil and sinister.

The whole experience got me thinking about old films I really enjoy. I immediately bought The Medusa Touch. I think I’ll have to see if I can also source The Cassandra Crossing and Holocaust 2000.  All these films left a very distinct impression on an entirely suggestible young boy many years ago. I think it is high time I revisit them all.

That Whole Reading Thing

This year I am on course to read around one hundred books. I’ve been thinking about this and I reckon it may have been the silliest fucking thing I have ever done. I’ve always been able to read quite quickly but I feel like I’m really pushing my limits a bit. I can tell you one thing, I wont be doing it again. When reading begins to feel like a chore rather than a joy I think thats the time to stop, take stock and re-evaluate. I think 2013 will have to have a far more sedate pace. I spectacularly lucky that from time to time I get sent copies of books to review and it is always a pleasure to receive them but I have to be realistic and accept the fact that there is no way I can keep up the frantic pace. My brain is starting to bleed out my ears. The book I finished tonight had nine hundred and sixty eight pages for fucks sake.

2012 Challenge Update

420km run, 80km to go. Its all feel rather academic now. With the exception of getting hit by a bus, or stray meteorite, there is every chance that I will complete this. With that in mind my gaze turns towards 2013. What feat of lunacy will take up the next twelve months? I reckon the cycling is next on my agenda. So without any further flim-flam or shilly-shally I am glad to confirm that next year I will cycle 1000k in 12 months (What made me think this was a good idea again? I must be mental).

In a gym related aside. I had a rather wonderful moment in the gym on Monday. I was on the treadmill doing the running thing, no-one else was in the room, and this came on my iPod.

I found myself running much faster than normal with a big, dopey grin on my face. I must have looked like a prize tool but I was ridiculously happy. I think I might of been having what the young kids call ‘fun’? (Yes, it was a surprise to me as well).

Tonights blog was brought to you by the letter R and the number 3.

Adios muchachos, till next time

And remember if you can’t say anything nice…dont say anything at all shut the fuck up.

Cheesecake Out

* It’s either this or unleashing me back into the wild. You decide. I don’t care I’ll do either.

Cinema, Sounds and Soup

To The Cinema..

Yesterday was a nice random collection of splendid moments. I woke early after a strange dream where I owned a notebook who insisted he be referred to as Arthur. That was the entirety  dream. Very odd indeed (and for me that’s saying something). Mrs Cheesecake and I went into town and I got my first taste of Starbucks new Salted Caramel Mocha. My goodness it was mighty fine. After a quick side trip to Forbidden Planet to pick up a plush Dalek as a late birthday gift we headed off for a double and the cinema. What did we learn?

  • Liam Neeson may have a special set of skills. Picking a holiday destination is not one of them. Do not trust his tourist advice. It’ll end badly.
  • The Bourne Ultimatum suggested it and Taken 2 confirms it. Istanbul is the go to locale for rooftop chases.
  • The Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade really have hit rock bottom of late.
  • Liam Neeson’s driving lesson technique involves a metric fuck ton of shouting. It’ll work though, you’ll pass
  • Joseph Gordon Levitt’s nasal prosthetic in Looper is first class.
  • Re: Looper – I speculate there will be a lot of picking apart of the plot. Personally I just enjoyed the ride.
  • Star Trek and now Looper have both featured flying motorbikes. I expect an imminent announcement confirming their actual existence.
  • Bruce Willis looks like a bit of a twat with long hair.
  • Good, bad or indifferent you could have heard a penny drop after the end of the showing of Looper we saw yesterday.
  • This last one though not entirely related to cinema happened at lunch so I’ll add it in – I’ve discovered my favourite of the seven dwarves in Ennui. (He so is a dwarf, he just gets very little screen time)

A Magical Musical Mystery Tour

My Spotify membership is starting to pay dividends. Over the last couple of weeks, via various splendid folks, I have discovered and really enjoyed  – Infected Mushroom, Red Fang and Mustach. Plan B’s soundtrack album for Ill Manors is also exceptional. I’m always pleased when I find new musical favourites. I even got the chance to pass some of these finds on to others.

Souper Trooper…

Mrs Cheesecake has spent most of today making soup. Four different kinds. Yesterday  she made four loaves of bread and a pot of goulash. She is like a frickin machine. The best thing I get to test/eat the outcome. Its great having a spouse who rocks in the kitchen.

So there you have it. A weekend of visual, musical and gastronomic delights. I have to say I enjoyed it all thoroughly like the pop culture sponge that I am.

till next time

Adios

Maths, Movies, Monsters & Muscles

Pablo Cheesecake vs Mental Arithmetic

This week got off to an odd start. I discovered that my mental arithmetic is not only piss poor it is in fact SPECTACULARLY piss poor. As I have mentioned countless times before I have been on a diet and exercising for nearly a year. I have attempted, and I stress the word attempted here, to keep track of my weight loss. Some how (and I am still not sure how) I managed to utterly bugger that up. For some reason I thought I had nearly lost 3 stone (42lbs my American chooms). This week I finally realised I had actually lost over 4 stone (57 lbs) Don’t get me wrong I’m over the moon about it but you have to admit that is a bit of a fuck up isn’t it?

The Dark Cheesecake Rises

We saw The Dark Knight Rises today. I reckon it rounded of the trilogy quite nicely. Bane’s voice was undoubtedly very silly but everything else was pretty cool. My personal highlight? It’s a toss up between Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character and Anne Hathaway’s bottom.

Also saw the trailer for Dredd on the big screen for the first time.  Karl Urban does some outstanding chin work. I was impressed.

Cake, Cake, Cakeity, Cake

Mrs Cheesecake has once again outdone herself in the kitchen department. This is the cake she made for my and my nephew’s joint birthday party tomorrow*

Monster, Monster, Monster!

* Technically my birthday isn’t until Tuesday but we’re celebrating early.

Third Time to Charm?

Mrs Cheesecake has suggested we go to the gym 3 times a week rather than the normal 2. She must have caught me in a moment of madness because I surprised myself and immediately agreed. This week coming – Monday, Wednesday and Friday we are gyming it. So if I don’t update next weekend you’ll know what finally killed me. Captain Scarlett has electricity, Superman has Kryptonite, Pablo Cheesecake’s one vulnerability – the gym.

Nighty night Internets, I loves ya.

Tomorrow there will be cake

My 1st Proper Update ( and about chuffing time too)

Welcome one and all to the shiny new WordPress flavour of my Mid Life Crisis. As of today my Blogger blog is on ice and I’ll be doing all my updates here only. I am going to endeavour to update more regularly than before but in all honesty how long that lasts is anyone’s guess.

So without further ado. My latest nonsense.

The Amazing SpiderCheesecake

I saw The Amazing Spiderman yesterday and I have to admit I was pretty impressed. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone share a great on-screen chemistry. There were lots of nice little awkward moments between the two that made their burgeoning relationship feel very real. Speaking of awkwardness Garfield does a outstanding job playing the king of  geeky teenagers, Peter Parker. Even when he becomes Spiderman he didn’t entirely lose that sense of uncoordination it was always there lurking in the background. Mrs Cheesecake was impressed with the movement that the new Spiderman was exhibiting. Using a style heavily influenced by parkour it seemed more natural than the previous movies.

Unsurprisingly Martin Sheen and Sally Field were pitch perfect as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Sheen is utterly convincing and Field brought a nice modern take to a character that has deserved an update for years.

Eagle-eye views will no doubt notice some small nods to the larger Spiderman universe. I really hope that they expand upon these glimpses next time out. Admittedly it is going to be bloody difficult to top J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson. (c‘mon he was fucking splendid, admit it).

I was a little dubious when I heard they were rebooting this franchise, it all seemed a little unnecessary, but now that I’ve seen the results I’m happy to say I have been convinced otherwise. Marc Webb, the director, has shied away from overtly comic conventions and I think works all the better for it. This film falls somewhere in middle ground between the more realistic approach of The Dark Knight and the outrageous spectacle of The Avengers. I heard the other day that Sony are committing to a trilogy with this new cast. Good news. Perhaps we’ll finally see a cinematic interpretation of Electro or Kraven the Hunter?

So Close I Can Smell It

Last July I realised that my dietary habits were, frankly, fucking shocking. I was waddling about at 17st 8lbs (that’s 246lbs American chums) and giving Mrs Cheesecake endless sleepless nights due to may incessant snoring. Now nearly a year to the day  later I am 14st 6lbs (202lbs) and, I’ll be honest, I haven’t felt this good in a long while. As regular readers are aware I’ve been going to the gym regularly for the last six months. That and a healthier diet are starting to pay off. Just 3 more pounds and I’ll be under 200. Its been years and years since I have been that light. (I best keep an eye on things I don’t want to blow away in a strong gust of wind).

Once I hit may target (I’m aiming to drop another 12lbs at least) that’s when things are going to get really tricky.  I’ll need to try to find that elusive balance that will allow me to maintain a healthy lifestyle without falling off the wagon. I don’t ever want to go back to the way I was before. Enjoying my sessions in the gym should help with that. I guess I am going to have to remain ever vigilant.

Ohh and according the Mrs Cheesecake my snoring is a lot quieter than it was before as well.

EdgeLit

This coming weekend I’m going to be in Derby for EdgeLit. Looking forward to it. Every convention I go to is an experience in itself. What makes a con for me? It’s the people that you meet. Though I am naturally quite shy once I get chatting and I come out my shell a bit there is really no stopping me. So if your going to be there and spot a tall, hirsute looking man with bright red hair feel free to engage him in conversation. There is every possibility it may even be me. (I appreciate that I do look a little bit like the bastard son of a Crimewatch photofit and an escaped grizzly bear but honestly I’m harmless and will be happy to natter to anyone).

Thats all for now friends

Till next time, stay golden

The Amazing SpiderCheesecake

Big Fuck-Off Sharks (Not So Big Fuck-Off Cheesecake)

We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Cinema

Mrs Cheesecake and I managed to catch the cinema re-release of Jaws today. I find it hard to believe that the film is almost the same age as me, it has certainly aged far better than I. Fashions and tech have all moved on in that time  but those minor qualms aside this movie really has stood the test of time.  (OK I’m willing to concede that Bruce, in some scenes, does look like a ropey big old rubber shark that he is but hey it was made way back in 1975.)

Scheider, Dreyfuss and, my personal favourite, Shaw are all fantastic. Quint really is a mad fucker isn’t he?*

Captain Insane-o Quint (pictured yesterday)

* And the correct answer to that question is clearly a HUGE – Fuck Yeah!

What surprised me most was all the little things I had forgotten (never noticed?) since the last time I watched the film in its entirety. There is one moment where a couple of meteors shot across the sky just as dawn is breaking over the ocean. Never spotted that before, really nice touch.

I really don’t think there is anyway to improve in the perfection of this film…..or is there? I wonder…

Swim damn you, SWIM!….Oops too late, that T-Rex is screwed!

Interestingly there was also a trailer for the re-release of Chariots of Fire, I guess to tie in with the forthcoming Olympics? Mrs Cheesecake has never seen the film so perhaps we’ll check that out when it arrives. The Vangelis soundtrack still sounds suitably epic by the way.

In the most tenuous of ways Chariots of Fire links to my next thought…

Pablo Cheesecake vs. Pablo Cheesecake

My most difficult of challenges continues as my battle against the bulge rolls ever onward. 3stone (42lbs) so far! Recently though I have to admit that I don’t seem to have lost much weight. (I will keep trying though). That said I think I may be a bit more toned than I was before. Running is getting easier and I am starting to quite enjoy it. I’ve started weight training again, albeit slowly. Haven’t done that seriously since before the whole broken back fiasco thingee.  I’m sure I’ll get there eventually as I have significantly managed to change my diet (out with the crap, in with the tasteless). I just wish I was closer to my target now.

Impatient much? Just need to be a bit more zen about it all I suppose.

I think that’s all I’ve got for tonight. Random as ever.

Later Internet

Sleep well
